About Xueshan Range Forest Reserve

The Xueshan Range Forest Reserve protects a vast and ecologically significant region of Taiwan’s central mountain range, dominated by Xueshan (Snow Mountain), the island’s second-highest peak at 3,886 meters (12,749 feet). This forest reserve spans a complex mountainous terrain characterized by steep slopes, deep valleys, and diverse climatic zones from subtropical to alpine. The reserve harbors rich flora including dense coniferous forests of Taiwan fir, hemlock, and spruce, and a variety of endemic broadleaf species. It also supports diverse fauna such as Formosan black bears, macaques, and various bird species, making it a critical conservation area for Taiwan’s unique biodiversity. Historically, the range has been important to indigenous peoples and later became a focus for Taiwan's forestry management and conservation efforts. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the reserve for challenging multi-day hikes, especially the popular Xueshan Trail, which offers panoramic views, mountain hut accommodations, and encounters with pristine natural environments. The reserve’s alpine meadows, glacier-shaped cirques, and crystal-clear streams provide dramatic scenery year-round, with snow typically blanketing the peaks in winter. Aside from hiking and wildlife viewing, the area is ideal for nature photography and botanical study. The Xueshan Range Forest Reserve is managed with a focus on sustainable access, preserving its fragile ecosystems while allowing visitors to experience Taiwan’s high mountain wilderness. Its remote location and rugged terrain make it a destination for experienced outdoor travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty beyond Taiwan’s more frequented national parks.
